The Art of Keyboard Lesson

Keyboard lesson consists of different stages.

In the first part of the lesson, the instructor will prepare your foundation as a future keyboardist. This includes the knowing the keys and proper fingering. In this stage, the instructor stresses that fingers should stay curved and at all times should be relaxed. Also, finger numbers are usually used as a substitute for note names at the preparatory lessons temporarily.

In the second stage of the lesson, the basics in playing the keyboard, including the names of the notes and values are being tackled. More drills are necessary to make it easier for the students to memorize the keys.

Everything about legato, staccato, accent, crescendo, decrescendo, and other special symbols will seen on the spotlight of this topic and other noteworthy tips to be discussed in the thirds stage of the lesson.

The topics discussed in lesson 4 are the major and minor scales, and the intervals. Intervals are the intervals between keys on the keyboard. Melodic intervals are those played one after the other.

In lesson 5, common chords are discussed and in the sixth stage of the lesson, mixing of chords is further discussed. These are the chords taken from the parallel major or minor key as well as an introduction of modulation will be taught in this lesson, moving further from the traditional harmony towards the borrowed chords.

In the final lesson for the beginner keyboard players, the rules of species one counterpoint will be discussed.

The different kinds of motion will be discussed in this lesson. The various motion styles are as follows:

• Parallel – the voices move at the same interval and in the same direction.
• Similar – the same as parallel, the only difference is it should be done in different intervals
• Oblique – while the other remains on the same note, the other voice moves to the next.
• Contrary – voices are directed at the opposite directions.

Tips for Getting the Most out of Your Practice Time

1. Keep a log of your practice time to motivate yourself.
2. Practice during the same hour each day; make it part of your daily activities.
3. Don’t just play through the entire piece.
4. Start slowly and work up to faster speeds.
5. Practice with a metronome to tell in which parts you slow down.
